Don't mind a bit of theatricality in a live show, though so long as the music's good and played well, it's all dressing, of course. I like Arcade Fire enough and think they have the tunes and the exuberance to be just as good on a blank stage. Substance and style, imo.
It's only when groups are plugging their song-craft holes with frou-frou that it becomes annoying. Like that band whose name I've never bothered to commit to memory that makes amazing videos to bog-standard landfill indie songs; they always get loads of shares on social media whereas they'd be completely ignored if judged on their songs alone.
